Food and Reform supports prisoners and young offenders to understand how the food they eat can impact both positively and negatively on their mental health and how best they can use diet to improve both physical and mental well being. The project comprises of a series of 12 week courses working with prisoners and young offenders close to release. The programme is practically based and involves healthy eating, cooking and food growing.
The project aims to help prisoners understand how healthy eating could help improve aspects of their mental health and behaviour, and demonstrate how cooking and growing their own food can contribute to this. The training also provides prisoners with the opportunity to learn practical skills. Through addressing the underlying symptoms this training programme provides a gateway to addressing longer term rehabilitation and resettlement goals.
