The Building Local Food Systems Handbook has been produced to inspire, encourage, and enthuse you to explore, discover and act. The idea of the Handbook is to unpick some the key global food issues: climate change, GMO, peak oil, meat consumption and present some of the very practical actions that are happening around the country to mitigate these problems at a very local level and how you can get involved – as an individual, as a community or perhaps as part of a wider national campaign. The Handbook has been thoroughly researched, written and designed by Food Matters with support from the Local Food Fund.
Mapping Local Food Webs Toolkit

The Mapping Local Food Webs Toolkit, produced in conjunction with the Campaign to Protect Rural England, provides guidance on how to: plan a mapping project; collect, analyse and interpret relevant information; and how to produce a map and directory of your local food web. It contains meeting plans, questionnaires, participatory community engagement tools, workshop schedules and guidance notes designed to help you identify the information you need, show you how to gather it and explain ways to analyse and present it.

It is widely acknowledged that Local Authorities play an increasingly important role in addressing food-related health inequalities through improving and adapting available choices and by encouraging behaviour change. This role will now increase with the abolition of PCTs and the relocation of responsibility for public health within local authorities. There is a recognised need to support professionals, particularly in Local Authorities, with information and strategies to address the continuing growth of fast food outlets and improve the nutritional value of food on offer, with a focus on small, independent outlets in areas of high deprivation and within close proximity of schools.
This Toolkit has been specifically developed to help local authorities address the proliferation of fast food outlets and improve the healthiness of the food they offer. It is evidence-based and contains a wide range of practical tools, interventions and case studies to support this area of work.
Planning Advisory Note 06 – Food Growing and development

Adopted in September 2011, Brighton & Hove became the first Local Authority in the UK to adopt planning advice to encourage the provision of growing spaces in new developments as part of its commitment to sustainable development. Food growing in urban areas is too often limited by lack of space, but this new advice encourages developers to make creative use of walls, roofs, balconies and edible landscaping at the start of the planning process.

Integrating food and wellbeing into rehabilitation programmes is essential to long term success. The fab! toolkit outlines what is needed to run a successful programme exploring food and wellbeing with a focus on improving mental health. It details weekly session plans, course materials, handouts and facilitators’ notes, and additional information and a CD of resources. The toolkit can be used sequentially; however each topic can stand alone as a one off session depending on what suits your needs.

Budget Bites Handbook
The Budget Bites Programme supports people to understand the links between good food budgeting, managing debt, and how healthy meals are a vital component of wellbeing in all aspects of their lives. Budget Bites works by giving people the confidence and skills to cook from scratch, using low cost ingredients that can be bought at the local corner shops, food co-ops, or supermarkets to create meals and snacks that are affordable, healthy and appetizing for everyone.
The Budget Bites Handbook is a practical guide aimed at professional support workers including: Occupational Health, Social Worker support staff, Mental Health, Debt Advisors, Community Development, Housing Officers to support their clients to cook and eat better.
