Food Matters produced a toolkit which helps people understand their local food system and gives them the knowledge to change it.

The global food system is broken, leaving people either underfed or overweight and the planet in a climate emergency.

A local food web describes the links between local food producers, retailers and consumers.  The mapping process helps to increase people’s knowledge of where food comes from and how it is produced, distributed and sold.  This can encourage people to behave in a way that helps to protect and strengthen their local food system which supports their health, nature and the local economy.

Food Matters worked with groups of local food activists to research, design and produce a toolkit.  This toolkit is now helping people map their local food systems and informs food strategy work across the country.

Local food web mapping is a useful process for community groups focused on food issues and interested in supporting local food producers and retailers. It is also helpful for local authorities and food partnerships developing local food strategies or neighbourhood plans.

In a strong local food web, the different components are interconnected, mutually dependent and mutually beneficial. When people understand their local food web, they can help to strengthen it and establish new links between different components of the web.

The local food web mapping process helps groups establish a foundation upon which decisions can be taken and initiatives could be built
