Developing ways of working at a county level, to deliver local food system change.

Regional food systems are the future, being a scale large enough to make an impact, yet small enough to drive local changes.

What We Did

Food Matters was commissioned by East Sussex County Council, in collaboration with the four food partnership host organisations in East Sussex, to help develop the food system at a county level.

Food Matters conducted extensive desk research, including a policy, strategy and research review, stakeholder mapping and interviews, to identify leverage opportunities to bring about food system transformation at a county and regional level.

We then held workshops across the five local food partnerships, which prioritised the county and regional changes that people across the food partnerships wanted to see. This culminated in a county wide ‘Feed into East Sussex’ event, to develop a shared vision and key priorities for the county.

The Good Food East Sussex network was formed, and a series of recommendations were adopted by East Sussex County Council and the local food partnerships to drive forward the work.

Food Matters have now been recommissioned to deliver a second phase of the work, coordinating the Good Food East Sussex network and working alongside the local food partnerships to deliver on the identified priority actions for the region.

The project evidenced the value of the local food partnerships, and East Sussex County Council have committed to providing long-term funding for the five local food partnerships.
